Kingfishers in Grove Wood.

The Kingfishers living along the banks of the River Frome in Grove Wood have produced a bumper brood of fledglings this year. This is despite the floods and bad weather that have caused havoc for them, drowning their first nest in April. These young ones are pretty healthy but the parents have had to help by catching them fish from the currently muddy water. There are five in all so expect to see more flashes of blue along the river this year!

Wonderful footage - hope they all survive! It's such a treat to see one kingfisher let alone 5!! Have never seen them with young but we were lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the parents when we were in Bristol with friends earlier this year.

This is some wonderful amateur footage so thanks to whoever bothered to spend the time capturing them. There is something very magic about kingfishers, perhaps as they are thought to be lucky in folklore. You can read more here:

One of the best ways to spot a kingfisher is to listen out for its regular high pitched chirp gradually becoming louder as it flies down the river, or just sit in one spot for a long time!

Must say I have always been concerned about the creation of the bund encouraging wildlife to settle in this flood zone but I guess the beauty of wildlife is that it always adapts :)
